It's amazing what causes a thing to exist... Saltspring ISLE OF VIEWS (first Episode aired during the winter of 1995) is a video series that came into being through the sheer need for another media viewpoint besides our local newspaper.
Shows feature interviews with local islanders of interest, political commentary and often as not the sheer comedic relief of two old Geezers who seem to take to task just about any issue. We usually end the show with a viewpoint perspective on some current event.

    EPISODE 1: Series Debut

Pilot for the series features Paul Marcano and Sid Filkow introducing the format and musing over the direction the show might take, an interview with Dietrich Luth in his very accessible office at Mahon Hall. A final viewpoint with Sid.

EPISODE 2: "Straight from the Platter"

Features a wonderful interview with Simon Morris, an undersea sculptor, who creates underwater treasures to dive for. Also a Capital Regional Update with Director Luth's head on a platter, just the way his enemies seem to want him. The Geezers continue and our weekly Viewpoint.

  • EPISODE 3: "Letters to Santa"

The anti-Luth letter writing campaign really heats up with thousands of letters going astray to the North Pole... Santa tells all... (played by Dietrich Luth). A fantastic interview with Bruce Ruddell, local composer and historian... Bruce talks about the Wilson Duff story of the sacred Poles that were removed from the Charlottes. The Geezers do Breakfast. A year-end fireside chat with Dietrich Luth. The viewpoint is scruffy!

    EPISODE 4: "Shoreline Sealife"

New Years Message from CRD Director Luth, Marine Biologist David Denning speaks eloquently about a glass of sea water and more. The Lonely Geezer... Viewpoint.

EPISODE 5: "Let the Saltspring Island Political Games Begin!"

(2hr. Strictly Political Special) The Queen visits the annex of Government House and kicks off the Saltspring Island Political Games... Sliding into a serious documentation of the ant-Luth letter campaign's final treacherous influence on the CRD Board's January 10th meeting. The Geezers do some shopping... and Paul Marcano and Sid Filkow give their political commentary on the morning after... the campaign.

    EPISODE 6: "Mid-Winter's Lullaby"

(45 min. Isle of Views - The Album) With Sid Filkow off on holiday in Mexico, Paul Marcano presents a new album of music, aptly named Isle of Views featuring the theme music from the show and a dozen odd new compositions... all instrumental and accompanied by beautiful video footage taken on Salt Spring as well as abstract art video when appropriate. A very easy and loose program with no recognizable political commentary.

EPISODE 7: "Coming Back on Line"

With Sid Filkow extending his holiday in Mexico, Paul Marcano hosts an episode himself and interviews Lynda Laushway just prior to her successful bid to become the local NDP candidate, the show features a compilation of footage shot before Sid Filkow left, including a new phone 'out' segment of the show with our man in Beaver Point, Shilo. The Geezers show us one of the oldest Cell phones and Satva and Claudio shoot some final shots at the pool hall.

EPISODE 8: "The Salt Spring Fever of Eros"

Erotica overtakes the Saltspring Community, with the Erotic Artshow and Eros by the Hysterical Society featured. The featured interview is with long-time Salt Spring resident Lillian Horsdal.

EPISODE 9: "The OCP or is it the Official Community Police?"

As much as the show tries to stay out of politics, it is such a fact of life on Salt Spring Island that when The Official Community Plan hit the fan, it was immediate fodder for many an Isle of View skit... enter Officer Smeed of the 'Official Community Police' and the raids begin... possession of more than an ounce of brightly coloured paint is sufficient cause to search and seize an entire store of restricted paint and colour charts! Alan Redpath of Calyso Carpets is first to fall under the might weight of rules and regulations suggested in the Community Plan... Mike Levy enlightens us on the importance of an OCP and our Update with Dietrich Luth reveals what processes could have improved the community input. Lynda Laushway makes a final appearance before the 1996 Provincial Election.

EPISODE 10: "The Saturday Market - Where Are They Now?"

While no-one on Salt Spring wishes to re-live the Saturday Market Controversy, the fact remains that livelihoods were lost and lives were changed. In an attempt to organize the market and run it more efficiently, unjust and exclusionary bylaws were passed. To this day these bylaws have alienated local residents, vendors and shoppers alike from participating in what was essentially a time-honoured community event.
Episode 10 re-visits some of these "missing" people to find out how they are doing, what their sentiments are and how they reflect on what has happened to island community spirit.

EPISODE 11: "To Trust or Not to Trust"

It's an interesting question... our interview finds us on the highway of life with local resident Drew Clarke, whose campaign to "Bust the Trust" is finding a surprising amount of support from island residents. Drew asks islanders to question whether the latest draft of the OCP will in fact lead to a new draft or perhaps simply a higher level rewrite of the bylaw governing all island OCP's in general? The timing of the Trust's new bylaw 42 (July 19-29) seems to suggest that perhaps a more all-encompassing bylaw might prevent individual islands like Saltspring from customizing their OCPs to perhaps their own satisfaction???
Episode 11 gives a voice to the sentiment that independence is hard won and shouldn't be so easily relinquished.

EPISODE 11.5: "Islands Trust controversial Bylaw #42"
This is the one we are going to have to live with a long time folks. Bylaw #42 essentially means that whether we choose to become a Municipality or not, no island in the Trust Area may opt-out from under this unusual, specially tailored, extra level of Government that all islanders live under and all other Canadians are free from. The Islands Trust has recently demonstrated it is a purely expensive bureaucratic function with no mandate to really do anything about protecting anything green or otherwise. They can pass bylaws to stop individuals from cutting down a tree in their back yard but they can't stop a company from clear cutting an entire forest.

EPISODE 12: "Salt Spring Centre - A Tour"
A very special and intimate look at Salt Spring's Spiritual Centre and their Guru too! A humorous first hand look through the eyes of our one and only Sid Filkow who also happens to be a resident of this novel little Utopian Society.

EPISODE 13: "Alien Visitation - Australian Mystic Visits Saltspring"
Alien Visitation is fabulous! An aboriginal from Australia on a 'walkabout' the planet performs a couple of outdoor cafe gigs "spreading his mystic message". One of those genuine 'truth' seekers, wonderfully novel and precise philosophical perspective - very primordial and very humorous.

EPISODE 14: "100 Years of Central Hall"
History as only a long time original resident can tell it.

EPISODE 15: "Bahai One World Celebration"
The Bahai One World Celebration is a yearly late fall event here on Salt Spring and is generally an evening of performance art by locals and the students of a Bahai School here on the coast. Their message brings out the ideal concept of mutual respect for all religions, harmony and diversity. Seems like such a fundamental message but it never hurts to keep reminding ourselves of this high ideal.

    EPISODE 16: "Ganges 2050"
Well Virtually that is! Includes a great cross section of material with a computer generated Ganges 2050 as the backdrop.

    EPISODE 17: "Geezers in Space"
Well it wasn't long after John Glenn's famous "Return to Space" mission that the Geezers were knocking on doors looking for a handout to finance their own trip... well luckily we had the technology and off they went... Some funny stuff happens from their perspective.

This was Isle of View's last episode after a decent kick at the can. We were very happy to archive so many wonderful interviews and humorous moments in Salt Spring's final days of innocence. Politics, turmoil and a renegade newspaper have recently tainted this quiet little community's wonderful innocence. ( on the other hand maybe it has always been that way and we just hadn't noticed. )
